How the Game Is Played

Pickleball is one of the newest additions to Utah high school athletics, reflecting the sport’s explosive growth nationwide. Played on a court similar in size to a doubles badminton court, two or four players use solid paddles to hit a perforated polymer ball over a 34-inch net. The game combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis into a fast, accessible sport.

The ball is served underhand diagonally, and rallies develop with a mix of dinks (soft shots near the net), drives (hard groundstrokes), and volleys. A key rule is the non-volley zone — a 7-foot area on each side of the net known as “the kitchen” — where players cannot hit the ball out of the air. This rule prevents dominant net play and encourages longer rallies.

Scoring

Pickleball uses side-out scoring in traditional play and rally scoring in some formats:

  • Traditional scoring: Only the serving team can score points. If the receiving team wins a rally, they gain the serve (a side-out) but no point.
  • Rally scoring (increasingly used in high school): A point is awarded on every rally, regardless of who served.
  • Winning a rally: Points are scored by hitting a winner, forcing an error, or when the opponent commits a fault (hitting out, into the net, or a kitchen violation).
  • Dink rally winners: Soft exchanges at the net (dink rallies) are a hallmark of skilled play, ending when one player makes an error or finds an angle.

Games are played to 11 points and must be won by 2. In best-of-3 formats, the first team to win two games wins the match.

Period Structure

Utah high school pickleball matches are best of 3 games, with each game played to 11 points (win by 2). In some tournament formats, games may be played to 15 or 21 points.

In doubles play, both players on the serving team get to serve before a side-out occurs (except at the start of the game, where only one player serves). Players switch sides of the court after scoring while serving, keeping the rotation flowing.

Teams switch ends after the first game and again before a third game if needed. In the third game, teams switch when one side reaches 6 points.

UHSAA Rules

Pickleball is an emerging UHSAA-sanctioned sport in Utah, with the association developing guidelines as participation grows:

  • Format: High school matches typically include singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events, with team scoring across all flights.
  • Serve rules: The serve must be underhand, with contact below the waist. The ball must clear the net and land beyond the non-volley zone line in the correct service court.
  • Non-volley zone (kitchen): Players may not volley (hit the ball in the air) while standing in the kitchen. A player’s momentum cannot carry them into the kitchen after a volley.
  • Double bounce rule: After the serve, each team must let the ball bounce once before volleying. After both sides have played a bounce shot, volleying is allowed.
  • Equipment: Paddles must meet USA Pickleball specifications. Outdoor balls are standard for high school play.

Utah High School Pickleball Season

Pickleball is a spring sport in Utah, with the season running from March through May. As a newer addition to UHSAA athletics, the sport is building its competitive structure with increasing numbers of schools fielding teams each year.

Practices begin in early March, with dual matches and invitational tournaments filling the regular-season schedule. Region play determines qualifications for the state tournament, held in May. The state tournament features brackets for singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

Utah is at the forefront of high school pickleball adoption, driven by the sport’s massive popularity in the state. Many high schools have installed dedicated pickleball courts, and the sport attracts athletes from tennis, badminton, and other racket sport backgrounds. As the UHSAA continues to formalize the competitive structure, pickleball is poised to become a major spring sport option for Utah high school students.
