How the Game Is Played

Football is the flagship fall sport at Utah high schools, with Friday night games serving as a centerpiece of community life across the state. Two teams of eleven players take the field, alternating between offense and defense. The objective is to advance the ball down a 100-yard field and into the opposing team’s end zone.

The offense has four downs (attempts) to gain at least 10 yards. If successful, they earn a new set of downs. Teams move the ball by running it or throwing forward passes. The defense tries to stop the advance through tackles, pass breakups, and turnovers. Special teams handle kickoffs, punts, and field goal attempts.

Scoring

Utah high school football uses standard scoring values:

  • Touchdown — 6 points, scored when a player carries or catches the ball in the opponent’s end zone
  • Extra point (PAT) — 1 point, a kick through the uprights after a touchdown
  • Two-point conversion — 2 points, a successful run or pass play into the end zone after a touchdown (instead of kicking)
  • Field goal — 3 points, kicking the ball through the uprights during a regular play
  • Safety — 2 points, awarded to the defense when the ball carrier is tackled in their own end zone

Touchdowns and field goals make up the bulk of scoring. Close games often come down to late-game drives and clutch field goals or conversions.

Period Structure

Games are divided into four 12-minute quarters with a running clock. The clock stops for incomplete passes, out-of-bounds plays, penalties, scores, and timeouts. Halftime is typically 15 minutes. Each team receives three timeouts per half.

If the game is tied after regulation, Utah high school football uses an overtime format where each team gets the ball at the opponent’s 10-yard line. Teams alternate possessions until one team scores and the other does not. Beginning with the third overtime, teams must attempt a two-point conversion after any touchdown.

UHSAA Rules

The UHSAA administers high school football across Utah following NFHS rules with state-specific guidelines:

  • Mercy rule: If a team leads by 35 or more points in the second half, a running clock is used (stopping only for timeouts and injuries) to expedite the game.
  • Classification: Football is divided into classifications from 1A to 6A based on enrollment. Smaller schools in 1A play 8-man football, while 2A and above play 11-man.
  • Heat protocol: The UHSAA enforces heat acclimatization guidelines during August practices, limiting full-contact sessions during the first week of practice.
  • Ejection policy: Any player or coach ejected from a game must sit out the next contest and may face additional UHSAA review.

All equipment must meet NOCSAE safety standards, and officials are UHSAA-certified.

Utah High School Football Season

The football season kicks off in mid-August with preseason games and runs through November. Region play begins in September, with teams competing against schools in their classification and geographic region.

The UHSAA state playoffs begin in late October. The format is a seeded single-elimination bracket for each classification. Higher-seeded teams earn home-field advantage in early rounds. State championship games are played at a central venue, traditionally at a university stadium, in mid-November.

Teams typically play 10 regular-season games before the playoffs. Football draws some of the largest crowds of any Utah high school sport, with historic rivalries and homecoming games creating an electric atmosphere throughout the fall.
